Since I actually have a book in my possession I am going to try to keep this ball rolling. I really hope we can work out all these kinks and get this project back on track. This is Son's book and I did this with india ink and alcohol markers. I'll post the progress as soon as I make some !

Hey gang... yes I know my last post was a big fat 'give up', but now I am just thinking that perhaps if we can figure out where the heck all these books are then I may stay as these portrait exchanges are a hoot. Part of the reason I just wanted to go was that I haven't had a book in almost a year so it just seemed kind of an annoying thing in the back of my mind. The exchange seems really active on the other side of the rotation, but I haven't seen and posts from a couple of members ahead of me for ages? Is there a backlog of books somewhere???

Creative Hiatus...

Hey guys n' Gals... I still haven't had a book since November of last year. This is such a great group of folks, but perhaps if the books cruised along a little quicker, my creative energy may have stayed... but mine has fizzled! My summer sailing trip made me realize that I really enjoyed doing 'nothing' (and would love to spend more time doing it)! I sadly think it is time for me to shut down my involvement in these exchanges... my plate is full enough, and I am really wanting to simplify! These exchanges are supposed to be fun, but I just don't like the feeling that they are something I HAVE to do (even though I haven't had one from this exchange in a while), amongst all my other "have to do's". Sorry guys... hope you can still keep it going! Thanks everyone, I really enjoyed doodling with you all... :)

I am thrilled that moly_x will be exhibiting at Minnesota Center of Book Arts (MCBA), between mid-January through March 2011. It's coming up! This is a great venue, and this exhibit could mean some wonderful opportunities for other exhibitions around the country, and possible grants. This is a very receptive community.

I would like a few of the great portrait books from this group. These books do not have to be completed. If you have a book right now would you consider sending it to me next. It will be out of circulation through March, but it will get some wonderful attention. I will guarantee it's safe return, or delivery to the next artist on the list.

MCBA does a great job of documenting their shows, so you will have a nice record. Whoever is in the book may add another credit to her/his resumé. We will continue to look for other similar venues for moly_x exhibitions. There are many book art institutions like this around the country, and there are many university book arts, and illustration programs.

I have dreamed of this exhibit since we started this little project. I would like to get 2 or 3 portrait books from this group.

Son's book is very inspiring, it made me want to try something different. Done with India ink and nail polish :) Definitely not the best idea, it came out all sticky and gave me headache...

Just wanted to let you know that I will be moving - to Germany! It's an awesome opportunity that I just couldn't pass up. I move at the end of August. I am still VERY interested in staying with this group, but understand if throws a wrench in the system. I should have my German address sometime in July, would be happy to forward as soon as I get it. Think of it as another international layer to the international moleskine exchange.

Oh gosh, I am SO SO SO sorry for all of this disappearance business. I have been really busy these past couple of months and now have 3 molys in my possession! I want to finish them but I am also in finals week for school right now, so they might not get done in the next 2 weeks. I had not received any packages in quite a while, so i inquired at the post office and it turns out, none of my packages were getting sent to me. I am slowly (but surely!) working on them now. Here is the finished product. I actually did a portrait of Claire and i thought it looked terrible so i did the one you see there on a separate sheet of drawing paper and surgically inserted it into her japanese moly. I didn't want to take up much more room or do something similar to what i did in Aaron's book, so i decided to make a smaller portrait of myself. I continued Julie's leaves and eventually added myself as a giant balloon being carried by Claire's hand ( one of the photos Claire included in her reference shots was a giant photo of her hand holding a pen, so i felt like Claire really wanted someone to draw her hand) I have no clue how all it all ties together except in it's randomness, which always ties everything in. I hope you like it Claire and i hope everybody else does as well.

Hi I've been missing in action for a little, but i'm back with full force. I just finished up Emon's book and shipped it to Josh and i'm currently working on Claire's book which is about 65-70%finished. Just some small details, glue and fixative and it'll be ready to go ! I'm just curious how things are working out ? I think some people have dropped out and such so i just want to know about who has what and when and where ? I'll post some photos of Claire's book as soon as i get a chance.

So, this took forever. Not to draw but to get both parts finished. So long in fact that two seasons passed... and with that comes the story. Son's half was done near the end of summer, it was hot, I was sweating buckets drawing down on a bench at the ocean. I quite enjoyed myself but ran out of time that day to do my half...then came work...blah blah...we all get it, i hate making excuses but it happens to the best of us.

Now Mine I did this morning, freezing in my room, hoodie pulled up, heater cranked. The levels aren't 100% in this scan but you may be able to pick out son's vibrant orange colorings, goes nicely with the warm weather in which it was drawn. If I had an ice blue felt I would have used it for mine...instead I went with dull desaturated brown, sort of an opposite colder feeling to the warm saturation in son's portrait.

To end, Julie, I'll get this in the mail to you today...I promise. Maybe it'll even get it time for xMas...maybe I'll wrap it :)

hi everyone.... i cannot believe how neglectful i've been... i've got two moleskines, which are yet to be drawn in, and i feel so behind. i recently just got a full time job and i've also been preparing for several shows and events i'm participating in later this month and next year... so, is it against the moleskine portrait party rules to drop out? i'd be disappointed in myself, but time has really become an unavoidable issue...

This is pretty much finished. I tried to keep the bricks going from Julie's portion into mine. This was done in ink and watercolor ( which isn't working too good for me in these mollies, even though in my own I use watercolors profusely ) and some colored pencil. I have a couple of small details and a little cleaning up to do and then it's off to Chickenmaster Josh.

I started to work on Emon Xie's book. I used the photo of him in a tuxedo which inspired me to come up with the 007esque theme. So far just india ink, i'm guessing i'm going to use some watercolor and perhaps some colored pencils. Josh, Aaron's book is on his way to you so look out for that ! I'm going to work on Emon Xie's book diligently. I plan to have it done as soon as possible. School and work are getting in the way but i will make the time!

Apparently there's been some confusion. You see, I must have told one of my stupid jokes, and somebody called me a dork. So far, nothing out of the ordinary. However, Julie must have overheard and thought the listener called me dore, which, if you put a little accent thingy over the "e," means "golden" in French. From that, Julie figured I must be some kind of genetically modified chicken, one who not only tells bad jokes, but lays golden (dore) eggs. Being the entrepreneurial type, Julie locks me in with the chickens, and waits. I drew in the little thought bubble to really drive the point home.

Here are a couple of Polaroids of me and death by monkeys after a bar brawl !!! Us Moly Xchangers have to stick together. I used watercolor, colored pencils, india ink, and markers. The watercolor was working fine on death by monkeys, but when I was using the watercolor on my face it started soaking in really quickly (weird). Anyway I think it came out pretty good (the watercolor ) I'm a big fan of plaid so I might keep it as my personal theme for this exchange. This book is about 85% done. A little more tightening up and it'll be on it's way to Chicken Master Josh. Hope you like it DBM!!!

I just finished Julie's book, it was sitting at my drawing table waiting for some final touches which I finally got to. I'm way happier with the portrait I did of Julie than the one of myself but all in all I'm pretty satisfied. This will be on it's way to Josh very soon. Julie I hope you like it ! Oh and I received Death by Monkey's book the other day so I'll have some photos of that soon. It's kind of fun playing catch up, I like the pressure !! Thanks again to everyone for their patience.

All done, and quite a learning experience trying out some of the tips I've garnered from artists on dealing with the yellow card stock of the books versus water based mediums. I've tried to tie in way the ocean and water relate to Claire's bio & beautiful gallery works, so hopefully this isn't to strange!

I'll be passing the book on to Aaron tomorrow, and moving on to Son's, base coat of paint already dried overnight now.

I actually made an incredibly stupid mistake when I wrote your address Josh, and received my book in the mail since no one picked it up it was sent back. It's in my possession. I apologize for the mistake and the book is being sent out tomorrow in the morning in a nice new envelope with the correct address. I am 90% finished with Julie's so I'll ship mine first and then I'll ship Julie's to Josh in a day or two. I'm a little behind, been busy with some things that I'm not too happy about. Rob sent me his moly over a month ago, and I still haven't received it. I checked with my local PO and they're not holding it hostage (or so they claim). Media mail can be painfully slow sometimes, so I haven't given up hope.

I was going for a sort of carnival, Chinese New Year feel. The idea was that my charecters were wearing masks of me, carrying effigies of me, and the like.

Sometimes you get done with something and you look at it, and suddenly, its kinda weird.

This is one of those times. This drawing makes me look like an egomagniac...which i wasnt aware I was. Sometimes you gotta just ignore Fruedian implications, theyll drive you crazy.

I have a question:

Once I receive the new moleskine, do I draw another self portrait of myself as well as a portrait of the person it belongs to.... OR just a portrait of the person it belongs to??

And apologies in advance for the super thin pages in my moleskine. It was the first one I'd ever bought and I didn't realize it was very light and thin paper. I hope it doesn't inconvenience any of you. Please feel free to skip pages if you think your drawing will bleed through (sorry Morissa!)

So i received Brett's Moleskine in the mail a couple days ago, and decided to start sooner rather than later because i know the next few weeks will be very busy for me. Unfortunately, Brett's moleskine has very very thin pages. I did her portrait on one side, and then proceeded to do mine on the page before with pen. i tested a small line out to see if it bleed through, but it didn't seem to. after a bit of drawing i turned to page to find it had completely bleed through onto the portrait i did of her!

Here are the two portraits. i haven't finished mine yet (the pen one)

so my questions for you all and especially Brett;

should i just leave it how it is, redraw it on the next page, or go buy a moleskine with thicker pages and attach Brett's self portrait, my self portrait, and just redraw her portrait??

im just worried other people might encounter the same problem with such thin pages. (she used the type with a card stock cover.)

Well anyway, i should be sending my moly out in the next couple days to josh, hope all is well with everyone!

woohoo! i finally got around to my entry! This is me in all my Prismacolor glory. I feel like it needs something else on the right but I accidentally started one or two pages in instead of the first one, so i had to heavily decorate the couple of spaces before. I also should warn you that i dont have grey teeth, my colored pencil smudged and made my teeth look grey! woops

Hi All,

Allow me to introduce myself, I'm Jennifer Kraska and I'm really excited to be a part of this group.

I have been drawing for as long as I can remember. My formal education is in Industrial Design, and have been working in the automotive industry for 12 years (I think that it is pretty cool that I can say that I draw cars for a living). I am a self taught watercolorist and have recently become addicted to molys (have filled 3 in the last 5 mos, my moly has become a sort of security blanket for me, I don't leave the house without it). The auto industry has been very good to me, I've no complaints, but the need to create and share my own art is stronger than ever.

I'm drawn to birds & bugs (no pun intended, I swear!). Always have been. I love the unpredictability of watercolor. Assume because it's the complete opposite from what I do at work everyday. I'd love to illustrate a childrens book someday. I'm always looking for ways to challenge myself artistically. Hence moly exchanges.

I love to travel and will jump at the opportunity whenever it presents itself. The world is an amazing place, I always learn something about myself when I travel, even if it's what not to do.

I have two Jack Russell terriors, Dax & Odo. Last but not least, I am a HUGE Star Wars geek.

Good to meet all of you. Now I have to get a move on on my self portrait.

I forgot that I had to write this, so here you go:

My name is Brett Manning. I always get asked by bank tellers if I'm depositing a check for my boyfriend... I like my name. My favorite colors are brown and grey... maybe because almost every other color looks nice with either brown or grey.. or maybe because they can be looked at as a combination of all colors... no wait, that's black... I went to school and majored in fashion design and I never knew why. I don't like trends and I don't enjoy drawing attention to myself because of my clothes.. I just really enjoy drawing fashion illustrations. I'd much rather work with animals and be a more successful freelance artist and illustrator with high hopes of someday becoming published.

Currently I live in Chicago with my beautiful boyfriend Franky and our lovely man-cat Sidney. They are my best friends even though Sid enjoys howl-meowing at 4:00 a.m. and Franky has troubles remembering how to fold clothes, but that's okay, they're both the best folks I know and I love them. We want to get out of this city soon though. I miss the stars at night and the smell of the earth when everything is asleep and the sky is so dark blue, but the moon is so bright and big that we don't need flashlights while riding our bikes along the dirty gravel roads.

When it comes to my art, I am drawn to texture, balance, dream-like experiences, transcendental qualities, bla bla bla.... I guess my work can be somewhat surreal. Surreality is good. For me, I am able to let out my inner most feelings and thoughts being the overly emotional female I am... It's a healthy process. Often I will do automatic drawings, and through this I've realized that I have a strange attraction towards hairy imaginary beasts.

I enjoy forming theories and philosophies in my mind and never telling anyone about them.

I am addicted to coffee.

Hmmm... That's me I suppose. haha.

Oh oh... looks like my last post got written over. No biggie, we are just happy to see Son back in action.

To sum up what was here before (from what I can remember). Parita has withdrawn, Jennifer has taken her spot... she will be an awesome addition.

We are still needing to here from Olivia, Lindy and Clark. We should give them to the end of the week then maybe find some peeps to take their spot so we all have time for a June 1 goal. Perhaps keep an eye open to see if anyone has any buddies they want to join? Or more from portrait 6? Either way...

sorry i kept u guys and gals waiting, but i had to focus on my final thesis which i finished yesterday. and the cool thing is my professor and my fellow students love it :D
ok, im ready to go. but first i need to ask a stupid question xD
i know this thing is called moly exchange but i just bought myself some really cool "molylike" sketchbooks with high qualitity paper. so is there a chance i can use those moly fakes instead of buying a new authentic moly? i love molys for sure but im kinda broke at the moment :P

Okay everyone... apologies for jumping in here trying to get this group going! Looks like we have a few of use who are in communication and have confirmed themselves in the group, and a few who seem to be M.I.A. Julie has reorganized the mailing order according to location (thanks Julie), and also because one book is finished and already under way... I suggest that we go with this regardless of whether some are in the east or the west. If we keep 'country organized' then at least the books won't be constantly going through customs (longer mailing times). I did move Clark after Morissa to keep all the USA together.

Could everyone please comment on this post to confirm whether you are in or not, or if someone could take on the batch email to see if all the names on the order are indeed willing to be here. From what I see so far (in the mere two moley groups I have been in) is that just the initial getting going seems to be the biggest struggle. Once the books are going it seems to be okay... the portrait ones seem to be trickiest as there are 13 of us! Even if one of was appointed the coordinator then that would work... then we don't have to worry about sitting back waiting for everyone to do something! That person could be the 'go to' (and check in with) person so Marty doesn't have to worry about us! ;)

We also need to agree on a first ship date, so everyone at least has an idea when to start. Please send your address to the person behind you on the list... this is a proposed ship order. Please comment if you think it should be different! ;)

Hello, I'm Rob I'm from NY. This is my first exchange and I'm looking forward to it. I've been doing artwork for as long as I can remember. I mostly draw, I find it more comforting than painting or doing sculpture but I do paint from time to time just to break things up. I also do wet photography I shoot 35mm, medium format and when I can get my hands on one I shoot with a field camera. I like filling up sketchbooks and journals. I suppose you can say I like documenting things. I'm definitely looking forward to getting to know everyone and seeing everyone's work. I'm going to start working on mine a ASAP. I spent few days staring at my blank moleskine, too scared to draw a single line on it. I finally jumped and this is what came out... me at my desk, chewing my pen and wondering what to draw... I have not decided yet what is the background, maybe just colors and shapes... I think I'm going to work with color ink on this one, even if I'm really not sure if this kind of paper is good for liquid medium. I will post the result later.

Does any of you have started yet? I can't wait to see everybody's work! :)

There is a an unfortunate limitation to Blogger that effects communication in the moly_x_portrait groups. Comment notification only allows ten email addresses. Our portrait groups have 15 members, so 5 people miss out on email notifications of comments left on this blog.

Go to upper right of blog, select customize>settings>comments>and scroll down to comment notification email if you are wondering if your email address made it on the list. If you didn't make it on the list, please try to read the blog regularly. Also, if someone could set this group up with cBox, this would be a helpful communication tool. To check it out go to moly_x_portrait1 and scroll down to the bottom of the page. I can't do it. Only one free cBox per email address.

FYI: All of the group's email addresses are available to the group through customize>settings>permissions, in case someone wants to do a group email.
